Mirror

mirror

dear mirror
in your face, i see the eye of my soul
everything stripped bare, nothing is hidden

the lies i have lived for years
the truths i had hidden with tears
gleam in the furrows on my forehead

the regrets and heartbreaks and the pain of bereavement
i see them all
my agony is naked now

i wanted the hardcopy version of my dream
but i’m left clutching the remnants of a nightmare
yet who can question you, dear mirror?
who can doubt your unfeeling truths?

and now i’m a prisoner of your shifting truths
i see the creases of yesterday,
i see memories with the sharpness of nsibidi symbols on my soul

i see myself anew when the sky bends over brooklyn
i think i love it’s shade of blue
